Upon this movie's release, it had been less than 2 years since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. With that said, this fact-based drama about the Loving v. Virginia case (the court case that led to the overturning of the ban on interracial marriage) holds a relevant significance.

Loving tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple arrested in the 1960s for having the audacity to get married. Their case eventually winds up settled by the Supreme Court. The story follows their struggle to deal with maddening, clearly unconstitutional laws, a topic that…may feel familiar in today times. At the center of this movie are two great performances, and Ruth Negga as Mildred Loving is ethereal, multi-layered and compelling, Thanks to her restrained performance, Negga earned a much deserved Oscar nomination.

Director Jeff Nichols celebrates the landmark case Loving vs. Virginia which struck down anti-miscegenation laws in the United States. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga play the two kindly lovers respectfully if not with any real passion. The movie is noteworthy for a more nuanced underplayed style than you normally see these race related films. Perhaps that is what makes the scenario more chilling in that once upon a time in America, these laws were seen as perfectly normal. It's neat to see actors like Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton play more noble characters than audiences are used to. Ruth Negga is given a chance to shine as the quiet but courageous Mildred Loving. It's not quite as good as Selma but it's worth a look.
