In spite of a misleading trailer that libelously promoted it as a thriller, "The Beguiled" is nonetheless an eye-catching subtlety drama.

The casting and setting are top-notch. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Oona Laurence all stand out - and Colin Farrell is as well as the wounded Union soldier who finds himself recuperating at an all-girls school. Kidman is the headmistress, Dunst is the sheltered one, Fanning the forward on and Laurence the tomboy. The film builds in intensity, though I honestly was expecting a bit more heat - but for the performances alone is worth the watch.

"What have you done to me, you vengeful bitches." 'The Beguiled' is underwhelming, but beautiful to look at. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Colin Farrell are all excellent, as usual. The technical side of things is on a level of masterpiece and the imagery is quite haunting. Sofia Coppola is a strong director, despite slipping recently. This however, this is one slow burn that doesn't amount to much at all. No time was spent on the chaos or conflict. The sexual tension is there, but everything else not so much. The whole thing felt safe. Keep in mind, I think this is good. Wasn't blown away or amazed like anyone else.

Beautiful cinematography and lush photography clash with a suspenseful drama set during the Civil War. An all girls boarding school has to house a wounded soldier who charms the ladies and their schoolmarm (Nicole Kidman) one by one. The tense atmosphere and solid acting make it a quick if unoriginal 90 minute sit.
