"The Host" by Yojimbo

With some notable exceptions, I'm not a big fan of the monster movie. They tend to be utterly formulaic in a way that not many genres are; essentially they're all EXACTLY the same. But the many gushing reviews I'd seen of this, including phrases like. "no ordinary monster movie", "black offbeat humour" and "biting political satire" persuaded me it would be one of the good ones. Basically, through man's pollution of the local river, a huge mutation is created who turns around and bites the local people on the ass by appearing at strategic intervals and gobbling them up one by one. Until a plucky family band together and kill it. So how exactly is this "no ordinary monster movie"...? The "biting political satire" appears to be a clumsy message about how pollution is bad (no shit) and the …

"The Host" seems to have been directed by two completely different directors; one is good and the other was probably drunk. The parts that are supposed to be comic are so bad it gets depressing, although some them can actually be funny, using the infection theme for most of the jokes.
The monster's design/anatomy is far from the best I've seen. Either it is too fast or conveniently too slow.
The soundtrack doesn't follow a straight line; there's drama sound, action sound and "Mexican sound", all in the same movie.
Special Effects were soooo bad (with the exception of the monster) and the last fire scene was too amateur! I could say they wasted a budget of $11,000,000 but they somehow managed to get a $87,000,000 gross so, yes I do believe in miracles.

Almost put me to sleep

I was expecting so much more from this movie. I never expected it to be "Great" but I have trouble enjoying crappy B movies if they try too hard to be that. That is where this film lost me. It tried way too hard to go over-the-top and ended up loosing my interest. It wasn’t as far over the top as a “Shaun of the Dead” or “Kung Fu Hustle” but it came close at times, those times were just too far apart to keep it funny. If the movie was trying to be an outright comedy it clearly failed.
I found myself bored with the film within 30 minutes and then struggled to get through the rest of it. At times I thought that maybe it was trying to be a horror or action film, but then I thought that a cheesy horror would at least be trying to scare people… right? So after close to two …
