Its visuals remind me of Anderson films and Barry Jenkin's "If Beale Street Could Talk". I get the message and its use of metaphor but the story-telling and character development needed to be more convincing. The bland acting and very slow narration didn't help at all. I also found the emotional build-up to be poorly timed. However, I really like the production design, you know the design is good if it helps convey meanings for the film. I checked Joe Talbot's IMDB and with the opportunities in front of him, I think he'll be big soon.

A movie so subdued you almost don't realize how sad it actually is. "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" is a socio-political lament on lost identity that uses the city in which it's set as a perfect backdrop.
