It has some very entertaining moments, especially the scenes with Redd Foxx, but the underdeveloped "Harlem Nights" proves that writing and directing might be a bit too much for comedy legend Eddie Murphy.

It sports an exquisite costume design and slick art direction but "Harlem Nights" is nowhere near as memorable as it ought to be (at least in a good way for some viewers). Far more vulgar and profane than I'm sure anyone suspected but light on character develoent and an actual plot, it's a series of skits and gunfights and everything else you'd expect from an action/comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor AND Red Foxx. It ought to have been better than this with such a terrific lineup.

Oh, Richard. Why couldn't you star in a film worth a damn...? A typically crass and sexist gangster comedy from Eddie Murphy that's nowhere near as good as A Rage In Harlem, which wasn't that great itself.

I love this movie! It's definitely my favorite Eddie Murphy movie. But, I love the fact that Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor are in it as well.
