Lofty ambition hampered by weak execution.

A handsomely produced period drama trying to be a naughtier version of those 1940s wartime romances.
Charlize Theron is pretty good for what little the script gives her. The moral quandary facing the characters is a fascinating one. There is unexpected nudity that’s certainly welcome.
Except the movie does feel neutered, despite a R rating. Like it’s too self conscious to commit to its promised sensuality. Penelope Cruz begins a striptease which is tantalizing but it cuts before anything resembling skin is shown.
Stuart Townsend has a pretty boy persona but he’s a pretty wooden dramatic actor who’s outclassed by his female costars. There’s a throaway line about a lesbian relationship that already sounds way more interesting than the actual film.
