Reads like a Coen Brothers script sucked of humour and eccentricity. Some very solid direction and dedicated performances across the board remedy these problems to a level that makes the film good... good enough, at least.

A few more hours in the editing room and it would have been perfect. This gothic tale of faith, depravity, and retribution holds together even as it fumbles with its source material's tricky narrative.
