Eastwood reaps vengeance w/ no mercy to spare

Clint Eastwood plays a sinister gunslinger that agrees to protect a mining town from a vicious gang of outlaws. But on his terms and it's clear the townsfolk are not as innocent as they make themselves out to be. The tone is far darker and moody than Eastwood's earlier westerns which already earned attention for their cynical edge. When violence breaks out, it seems more sadistic and brutal than exciting and heroic. Eastwood is not bad though it's not much different from his other stoic roles. Some of the supporting cast members leave an impression such as Marianna Hill as an unpleasant shrew or Billy Curtis as the Drifter's sidekick. The movie is a change of pace from Eastwood's other westerns (and he'll revisit similar themes in Pale Rider). But it's not necessarily fun to watch.

High Plains Drifter review

Entertaining, funny, and stunning. A stranger arrives to Lago, a town with a mysterious secret, gets a lot of stares. The Stranger is then attacked by three notorious men while being shaved. He was asked by the Sheriff to help the town since The settings, cinematography and action sequences were splendid. If only the screenplay were improved to make the supporting characters more interesting, same goes for the unnamed hero. It's score was hypnotic which aids in the surrealism of the way it was shot. The trio of main antagonists could have had more history, same goes for The Stranger. The Stranger's best lines: "It's what people know about themselves inside that makes 'em afraid." "You're going to look pretty silly with that knife sticking out of your ass." and "Then you live …

"High Plains Drifter" by Yojimbo

Clint Eastwood stars in and directs this obvious homage to Sergio Leone as he resurrects the man with no name character, as an enigmatic gunslinger rides into the town of Lago and promptly kills the gunmen hired by the townsfolk to protect them against a trio of vengeful outlaws. They offer him the run of the town to replace them, but it soon emerges that he has a hidden agenda of his own. Another fine western from Clint, and laced with a healthy dose of the supernatural, this film is unusual in it's complete absence of a "good guy". The morality is not even grey; virtually every character is a self centred immoral hypocrite! Clint himself hasn't the slightest interest in justice, just bloody retribution which he gets in a great climax which sees him shooting it out in the blood red …

This maybe one of the first movies that Clint Eastwood directs, who turned into a great director nowadays. But I am always a fan of spaghetti westerns and Clint Eastwood as "The man with no name" who we know and love.
It starts like a conventional western, with a mixture of plot from High Noon (1952), The Magnificent Seven (1970), and a little bit of Il Mercenario (1968). A town had some enemies that has just been released from jail, and planned to get revenge on the town folks. They hired a stranger that just stopped by to handle the bad guys, and promised the stranger every free he wanted in town, and he wanted a bit too far. As the film progresses, we understands the townfolks had themselves a little secret, and the strangers might not be dropping by afterall.
It really shows …
