In Vienna around the turn of the century, fantastic magician uses his abilities to get the love of a woman. This was a alright film that I will never watch again.

A mix of intrigue, magic, romance and supernatural mystery beneath a dramatic context, this movie is beautiful above sad. I did not find any new or fresh property, but I would say the scenery and the cast, become the film in a sweet caress to my eyes.

If there's one thing that can be said for the Illusionist, it's that it's a very beautiful film, full of poetic moments and carefully composed shots. The script itself falls a little flat, as the characters fade into the background as more twists and turns are added into the plot. It bears comparison to the Prestige, but it's really a different type of film and, sadly, not nearly as impactful, either thematically or character-wise.

Edward Norton was great, but I really liked Rufus Sewell as the prince. Of the two magician movies that were released around the same time (this and The Prestige) I far prefer this one.

This came out around the same time as 'The Prestige' and both movies looked very similar. 'Prestige' is easily the better film, but this movie was good in it's own right and had it's own cool twist. However, I can't forgive the casting of Jessica Biel.

It's an Edward Norton movie about magic. What more needs to be said?

Yeah, we see EDWARD NORTON in other films like THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, THE PAINTED VEIL, FIGHT CLUB, 25TH HOUR, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Stick to those movies.

A moderately-successful drama that plays with the audience's heads in a self-congradulatory fashion; the final revelations (done in a Usual Suspects sort of way) explain very little else than the script thinks it's cleverer than the audience. Putting up with that would be a real illusion. I saw this film at the Sundance premiere sitting relatively close to actors Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel, and even they didn't seem to enjoy it very much. Final Grade: C+
