“Do you read Sutter Cane?”
One of the best movie experience I’ve had in awhile, especially with a horror movie. I can’t think of any other way to get yourself in the right mood for a movie then watching this on Halloween night, in the pitch black, headphones into the laptop, a bag of Skittles, and a cold Dr. Pepper.
Now that’s cinema right there.
‘In the Mouth of Madness’ is a great John Carpenter movie and just like some of his other work, it is very underrated. I honestly don’t understand the mixed reception this movie received. However I guess a mix reception to his movies must be second nature to John Carpenter. Not a flawless movie, but much better than most people make it out to be. Action: 1.5/3 + Comedy: 0/2 + Good vs Evil: 1/1 + Love/Sex: 0.5/1 + Special Effects: 0.5/1 + Plot: 1/1 + Music: 0/1 = 4.5/10 or 45%.
The main problem here is Sam Neil's turn to madness because he lacks any build or pushing point to transform. This is sad since the concept here is exceptionally fun and the loose debates regarding reality and the extent of gods, particularly how a god is formed, are constructed well. Rather than transforming effectively as the reality of the world does however, Neil decides to yell and scream in nearly every scene and then colors his face with a black crayon. Thus, the special effects and altering reality, which aren't as exceptional as the ideas they boast, overshadow most everything including the weak acting.
