When you take out the explosions and the spaceship fight scenes, "Independence Day" is actually kind of boring.

Run of the mill alien invasion (imagine that). Goldblum trademark "manic" is strained to breaking point. He has a very unlikely ex-wife in a very unlikely job. He has a comedy sidekick that is just plain tedious. He takes his Dad along to be horrified every couple of minutes by his son's actions. Explosions are loud and colourful. Will Smith is a badass that kicks a lot of alien butt with all the character depth of the sheet of A4 the plot must have come on.

Independence Day zips along at a fun pace with plenty of one-liners and some physical humor from the unlikely pairing of Smith and Goldblum. The effects are impressive, too, including the alien destruction sequences and a foray into an alien ship.

At one time, it was one of the biggest movies ever. Now it's just another alien invasion B-flick made on an A-level production. Piles on the cheese and the big effects.

I like this movie. Good for sci-fi and action fans. Terrific special effects. Earth invaded once again. Tall Will Smith and even taller Jeff Goldblum have a solution.

Quite possibly one of the greatest alien invasion movie to have been made in the last 20 years.
