Despite the ending seeming a little contrived (you'll see,) Christian Bale gives a magnetic and involving performance as an obsessive and grief-stricken young man. The film is a constantly shifting object, never what it seems, and captivates the interest from start to finish.

A creepy, twisting tale with a great performance by Christian Bale that was pretty damn good.

Intelligent and pretty dark drama which hinges on one of the most extraordinary performances of the decade. Allegedly Christian Bale lived on 1 cup of coffee and an apple (or a can of tuna) a day for 4 months to lose 62lb for his role as the haunted Trevor Reznik . The film does his astonishing sacrifice justice and is an admirable psychological and disturbing movie which keeps the viewer guessing until the final frame. Grainy and atmospheric, The Machinist is the type of film which crawls underneath the skin and stays there for a number of days. You'll be glad to know Bale put all the weight (and more) back on for his portrayal of Batman in his next film "Batman Begins".

One of those dark, creepy, twist filled, head trips that is actually great. Christian Bale is excellent here.

Very good. But, it IS a Christian Bale movie, so it's to be expected.

Christian Bale remains one of my favorite actors with his unwavering dedication and impressive performance in The Machinist. Brad Anderson does a spectacular job creating a dark and creepy Fight Club-esque environment to deliver the film.

I stopped this the first time my girlfriend and I tried to watch it, because I was so horrified at the way Christian Bale looked. It's sad when the most talked about thing with this film is the actor's weight loss and not the movie itself. Anyway... He does do a great job in this slow, oft-times boring film. I'm not saying it sucks, but watch it early or it will put you out faster than Benedryl. True, the end is interesting, but it takes a while to get there. In his last few films, Christian Bale has indeed proved himself to be an excellent actor, and has come a long way since that little kid in Empire of the Sun.

Dark and twisted and a stunning performance (and transformation) from Christian Bale - looking haunted and downright unhealthy, which definitely works in the film's favor. It moves a little slow, but the payoff is worth it.
