Stately costume piece about the British court trying to deal with King George III and his bouts of mental illness. Nigel Hawthorne bounces back and forth between a regal bearing and a pathetic state of mind. Helen Mirren is good as his compassionate wife. It's an interesting perspective about a historical figure who was traditionally maligned in American popular culture.

Extremely powerful historical drama about the ordeal undergone by King George III when he was suffering from porphyria, a disease so painful it can be mistaken for insanity. Nigel Hawthorne's performance as the ailing monarch is absolutely astonishing and deeply harrowing.

A tour-de-force performance by Nigel Hawthorne, which elevates this film above standard biopic material. The historical period is also lovingly recreated and beautifully shot.

Not a bad film, but painful to get through for some reason.
