Well acted. Pretentious and ponderous as hell. It actually starts out interesting enough. A brief summary of different examples of moments that merge circumstance and fate. The best acting comes from Tom Cruise, John C. Reilly, and William H. Macey. Julianne Moore just shouted and swore about everything. Granted, everyone had a scene like that. But her performance was more grating. Apparently the director said that he’d cut a few stories to make it shorter. I wish he did that too.

"Magnolia" is Paul Thomas Anderson at his densest and most structured.

The movie was absolutely awesome! PTA knows how to amaze the audience. The cast was great (especially Tom Cruise), the script good and the story realistic. One of the greatest movie, the world has seen!

Another winner from P T Anderson. Inventive character study spanning the lives of several (possibly too many) protagonists, dealing with many delicate and difficult subjects. Brilliantly acted, Tom Cruise giving a performance that proves me can actually act given the right director and material.

Magnolia is a brilliant film and potentially PT Anderson's masterwork. It boldly and smoothly juggles a multitude of storylines, all with similar themes of deconstruction and redemption. The film has a host of powerful character performances, notably by John C. Reilly (an Anderson staple) and Philip Baker Hall. Tom Cruise also plays against action man type here in a role outside of his movie star persona. The film's soundtrack is gloriously scored by Aimee Mann and Jon Brion and the film's concluding religious deus ex machina only works because it weaves so well into the themes the film has been toying with throughout its three hour length. One of my all time favorites.

A hard film to judge. I liked the narative stucture and the characters very much. It hit some good emotional points and everything gets resolved, for the most part. Screen time is shared equaly between the actors and they each have their own moment to shine. My only real complaint would be that it's a little too long for it's own good and this makes it harder to enjoy on repeated viewings. In the end, it's a solid film that's stuffed full of stories with emotional depth. Deffinitely worth seeing at least once.

Stunning. Be forewarned-its strong language is affronting, but makes the redemption that much more astounding. The theme of the wounds that children carry from their fathers is conveyed powerfully

Is it pretentious? yes. Is it over the top? yes. Is it brilliant? yes. Good, thats all that matters. Best living director does what he does best.
