While it's a bit hokey, especially when compared to "Clerks" or "Chasing Amy," its raunchy yet appealing sense of humor and familiar Kevin Smith nerdy-ness make the film's slightly contrived moments very easy to look past.

It's a weaker Smith film, but a weaker film from the stronger Kevin Smith era (the mid to late 90's), so it still has its share of social commentary, sharp jokes, and fun cameos. Not as inventive as Clerks, but way more fun than later films, such as, say, Clerks 2.

Probably the weakest film in the 'ViewAskew'-niverse (as Smith calls it). The humor is more spotty and while it does have it's moments and trademark Smith dialogue, it's just not as enjoyable as his other works. This really is for fans only.

definitely feel that this is one of Kevin Smith's weaker films. I love Smith to death.. but as a second film not so great. It wasn't as good as Clerks was, that's for sure.

I hadn't seen Clerks when I heard about this film. A lot of my friends told me that I would have to watch it, but when I heard that it was Kevin Smiths second film, I decided that I would have to see Clerks first. I became a fan of his movies and his style right away. Mallrats does go over the top in just about every aspect from the way people are in various situations to relationships. Overall I really like this film, it is original and very unique. I was happy to have gotten to visit the area of Redbank NJ where most of this film was shot, and I even got to go to the "dirt mall" flea market, which has since been closed and I believe turned into a movie theater. If you like cultural humor than this is a movie to see.

A good movie in my opinion that is more than just an amateur mash of kids roaming a mall. While I have never been a fan of Kevin Smith, this one still could be his second best film if one views it with a positive mind. See this for culture.

The most maligned of Kevin Smith's films, Mallrats is more slapstick than the sophisticated ruminations of Clerks. Still, I for one, still think Mallrats is damn funny and deserves a better reputation than most give it.
