A great cast wasted on a boring "suspense" movie in the loosest sense of the word. MARY REILLY looks like a stylish and intriguing Gothic melodrama but it feels more like a dry run with no actual script or even any sense of direction. Julia Roberts and John Malkovich try their best with the shoddy material. A few moments of dread do occur once the inevitable unveiling of Doctor Jekyll's transformation into Mr. Hyde occurs.

As advertised, this movie is bad enough to be uproariously funny. I love John Malkovich as much as anyone, but BOY was he a terrible casting choice for this movie. He's only ever played one character in his whole life -- it's a bit much to expect him to play two within one movie. Julia Roberts was also bland as dry toast, but she really suffered from the Lois Lane problem. It's hysterical to watch her try to make lines like "How was I to know you were the same person?" believable. Um, maybe because they are the same in absolutely every way? As far as I can tell, the chemical Jekyll invented was dark hair dye.
