A box office flop, but this handsomely shot drama focusing on an obsessive idealist who drags his family into the rainforest to start a new life is intelligent and well played by Ford at his most charismatic.

The Mosquito Coast is an underated movie that I never heard of until it came on 1 of the movie channel's, I got to watch it & I was hooked from the start.I read a couple reviews saying this is Harrison Ford's best or most interesting peformance.I'm not a fan of Ford's at all but it's true.I think this is 1 of the very few roles of his that I didn't find boring & actually liked.A VERY good movie that makes me want to go out & read the book

Harrison Ford gives one of his most complex, deeply-felt performances in this bleak drama of a family's survival, both of the elements and their increasingly delusional father. A minor gem both artistically and emotionally, though Ford's character is even worse in the book. Final Grade: B+

I may have liked it more had I seen it at an older age, but I couldn't find it in myself to like it too much. River Phoenix never appealed to me, but Harrison Ford was great in it.

I found this in the dollar bin about 5 or 6 years ago. I had to buy it. Harrison Ford is definitely different in this one, but you can really see how good of an actor River Phoenix could have been. It is weird, but worth a look.
