Gus Van Sant, a master of art-house, creates an effectively heart-breaking drama set against a Shakespearean template.

Contains a strangely unpredictable story, with basically no plot, and characters without much character. The dialogue and performances give this film a free-flowing feeling that breezes through the disjointed scenes. There wasn't much to ever fully grasp my attention. Simply put, I couldn't get into it.

A film that sums up a lot of Gus Van Sant's work; some beautiful imagery but often painfully pretentious. Taken as a piece of cinematic poetry, it succeeds. Taken as a piece of entertainment, it fails.

Mike (River Phoenix), a gay street hustler meets Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves). It’s hilarious how people talk here, as if in a Shakespearean play. The characters were unlikable and over the top while the plot seems to be all over the place. The screenplay was interesting with quotes repeated from the film - “Don’t worry, everything’s going to be alright.” and “Jesus, the things we’ve seen.” Cinematography was impressive though the soundtrack was almost non-existent. The performance of River Phoenix was astounding which was noticeable with the various accolades he received. My Own Private Idaho has its highlights and low-lights, which for this reviewer cancels out.
