David Cronenberg takes an off the wall artistic license and the result is this bizarre, but questionable allegory of drug addiction.

A film not just based on the novel of the same name, but also contains autobiographical moments from the author's life. It's many bizarre images melted together with the main character's confused writing process do offer some strange and paranoid scenes. The whole movie has a slightly noir feel to it. A more difficult Cronenberg film to fathom, but that's what makes it appealing. It's constantly confusing nature makes it harder to get into on first viewing.

This is, admittedly, a very strange movie. If you can overlook some of the grotesqueness, it is actually an intriguing and symbolic neo-noir film that explores themes of paranoia and mortality. If you can believe it, this is one of the more accessible Cronenberg films.

If you've read the book, be prepared for something a little different from the film. Done in a distinctly "Cronenbergian" style, Naked Lunch (the film) is an exploration of the drug-induced stupor of a troubled author, not a direct adaptation of a nearly unadaptable film. Cockroaches, larger-than-life centipedes, and polymorphous typewriters exist in limbo between an exotic fantasy and the sad reality of writer's block addiction.

I like David Cronenberg and I like films that are weird, but, try as I might, I just couldn't wrap my mind around Naked Lunch. I can't fault it's a brilliant, bizarre film - I'm just afraid I didn't get it.
