Savage Islands is a better title than Nate+Hayes!

This movie is almost completely forgotten but it's one of the better Indiana Jones rip-offs from the 1980s. This is thanks no less in part to its premise and setting. It's a pirate movie set in the South Pacific during the 19th century. Tommy Lee Jones plays real-life buccaneer Bully Hayes who has to help a missionary rescue his bride from a vicious slaver, hostile cannibals, and pesky German empire-builders. Jones treats the script like the pulpy Saturday matinee serial material that it is and has fun. As his costar and foil, Michael O'Keefe is a bit of a boob but that's what the script demands and he remains likable enough but not as good as Tommy Lee Jones.
