The gross-out and juvenile humor makes this film painful to watch, but Ryan Reynolds turns in a charismatic and cocky performance and manages to captivate whenever he is on the screen.

Slightly better than most other films that have had National Lampoon tapped onto their titles, Van Wilder succeeds not due to its gross-out, played out comedy, but because of the characters. Not great, but better than average.
