A Nightmare on Elm Street has earned a sterling reputation as one of the best horror films ever made. It’s certainly one of the most original in terms of its premise. A serial killer who invades your dreams? Amazing. The first film itself has that to its advantage. The Freudian overtones and creepy sexual predatory vibe conveyed by Freddy Kruger does make him an imposing villain. Robert Englund’s performance is effective. The movie itself is more strange than scary. The ending is trying to be crafty but it’s more frustrating. First time viewers may be surprised by the darker tone compared with the sequels and parodies. Freddy Krueger is not played for laughs much here, he’s quite frightening.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" may be more iconic than 'great,' but it's terrifyingly original, unpredictable, and like other horror classics like "Jaws," plays on paranoia, making you less afraid of what you see and more afraid of what's lurking out of view.

"One, Two....Freddy's Coming for You!!! Three, Four....Better Lock Your Door!!! Five, Six....Grab Your Crucifix!!! Seven, Eight....Better Stay Up Late!!! Nine, Ten.....Never...Sleep Again!!!" This movie was Scary and really chilling. The visual effect's in the movie may be out of date but it's still well put together and frighting.

A Nightmare On Elm Street has a very strong premise for a horror film; a monster which attacks you while you sleep, something that you can never avoid and when you are at your most vulnerable. In the right hands, it could've been fantastic but Wes Craven really is a terrible director and it inspired a host of truly appalling sequels.

Scary film that has the actual pull of a nightmare. Englund sinks his teeth into the role of Freddy, and Langenkamp portrays an unforgettable heroine, Nancy. Johnny Depp meets a gruesome fate in his movie debut. Well directed by Craven with an eerie soundtrack (especially that jump rope song).

one amazing horror film.this is the kind of film that play with your head.making you feel and question "is this real" ? throught the film it reminds me of "memento" not literaly , but the idea of a film playing with your head.Wes Craven creates an amazing horror film that actually deal with the character's emotions and madness thought the film. Robert Englund gives an amazing menacing performance as FREDDY KRUGER. an amazing horror film that deserves to be celebrated a lot more than it does.

The first installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street series is the scariest and most dark, before the series ventured into campy territory. Robert Englund presents a creepy and unsettling villain. The film does a lot with subtle atmospheric cues, but it isn't afraid to be shocking and gory in a few choice scenes.

A film that made a star out of Robert Englund. A young Johnny Depp is included in this classic thriller of a killer who appears in your dreams. The idea is unique and just plain horrific. Its film score, direction and plot was credible except for some coy moments. The effects, make-up seems dated, still it is one of the pioneers of horror/thriller with a good development of a popular figure. Overall, a standard for one of the best films in the horror genre.

The horror masterpiece that made me afraid to sleep with the lights off. It launched the career of a young Johnny Depp and started the pop culture sensation of good ol Frederick Krueger.

I love the original one. Every single other one sucked though. The remake will def be the worst of them all.
