While it certainly has the Dickensian charms of the original story, "Oliver" is a pretty weak musical.

The story is about a group of orphans learn to be pick pockets to survive in the slums of inner city London. This movie has a creep villain and some really classic songs.

Has some iconic songs and wonderful acting. Some of the pace however dwindles towards the middle. Worth viewing for those who love musicals and dogs in it.

This musical dodges the darker elements of Dickens' classic tale, but it has one of the most singable and enjoyable soundtracks of any musical to make up for it.

As musicals go, this one is pretty good. The songs are as memorable as the characters, and for such a bleak story, everyone still looks like they're having a good time. Fun and family-friendly.

The singing is good all around except for Oliver himself he is rather terrible. Good thing the musical is really focused on the much more interesting characters. The two best are Ron Moody as Fagin who is perfect and Jack Wild as Artful Dodger, both worthy of their Oscar nominations. The songs are for the most part good, their better if Oliver does not sing in them though. Some are particularly good like reviewing the situation. The look is very good with Carol Reed's direction. Everything looks vibrant. And only who will buy sequence really goes overboard.

A mostly enjoyable film that reminds me a lot of "Annie." Shouldn't it be the other way around? Since I saw "Annie' first, I can say that I prefer that over this one. "Oliver" does have some good pranks and Oliver Reed is fantastic!
