Maybe the most self-important movie ever made, but it sure is entertaining.

Preposterous, posturing and pretentious. The film can be summed up perfectly in one scene, where in attempt to look more "rustic" and "American", the Australian lead is seen eating an apple with a knife, like look at how American I am! Of course the villain is a heartless bastard who kills several children just for fun and burns down a church filled with innocent Christians. Finally Gibson symbolically defeats the British commander with nothing other than an American flag itself.

Although it isn't that unique of a war film, Gibson presents a solemn and determined presence that anchors the film's plot. His devotion for his country and his family drives the film and gives heart to the impressive and frequent bloody battle sequences.

The best scene in this movie is when Mel Gibson's pre-pubescent sons have to fight in the war. It's a chilling scene.

Can anyone say Braveheart part 2? This movie is a complete remake of Braveheart but in a different time period. The action is even crappy, I remember laughing aloud as the cannon balls lobbed off peoples limbs. Cheesy, not worth a look.

This movie would make John Wayne proud. I have never seen so much flag waving in my life. Mel charges into battle in the invincible halo of his personal convictions, enshrined by the almighty dollar of his blockbuster status, proving once again that if you charge ignorantly into history, it can't harm you.

American history was never my favorite subject. If it had been as exciting as this, maybe I would've paid more attention. This is essentially a civil war Braveheart, though not quite up to the same standards. Still, it kept me interested.
