The esoteric swan song of Robert Altman, "A Prairie Home Companion" is charming despite feeling like an imitation of the director's previous masterpieces, i.e. "Nashville" and "Short Cuts."

Altman manages to be old-fashioned and innovative at the same time. The movie itself is a beautiful melody-simple story, great acting, and the catchiest songs (like Bad Jokes) you'll hear all month.

I didn't get it but I'm also not familiar with the subject matter. I think if I grew up with those kinds of shows, I might have appreciated this movie more.

It has its moments, but weird characters and a weird storyline that never really pays off. Good actors and a good director, though.
