For a director with a pedigree like FFC, you'd think he'd make a movie with more nuanced and interesting characters than the Rainmaker has to offer. It's slickly directed and acted, but there's something empty in the way the plot and scenes unfold in standard, uninteresting legal drama fashion. We've seen this movie so many times before.

This was really Matt Damon's year. He had both this movie and "Good Will Hunting" in the same year.
