I agree with many reviewers who say the movie is a bit over-long and could have used a bit more editing, but still, the story of the a group of men who first braved the skies above Edwards Air Force Base and later become the men who helped the U.S. win the space race. A standout cast and an important story well worth checking out.

The Mercury 7 earn the Hollywood treatment in this epic saga spanning across the decades of the space race. Interesting compared with most historical dramas, the significant others of the main characters earn their fair share of screen-time and even character development. Still, the film's leisurely sense of pacing and long running time might come across to some as bloated.

This sprawling epic loses focus sometimes during its over three hour running length, but it manages to nail the optimism and triumph of the US space race due, mostly, to strong ensemble performances. The film often chooses to use visual symbolism to demonstrate the astronaut's psyche, rather than relying on the physical special effects related to recreating the technical details of the space flight. It's a film obsessed more with character than spectacle and that makes it often very, very good.

Cool movie-great characters, great history. But over 3 hours long? There are a handful of scenes that add nothing to the story that should have been left on the cutting room floor.

One of the best films I have seen in awhile. It is almost unbelievable that this movie was made in 1983. It is definitely one of the most well-made movies of that year. Great cast and story. I recommend this to everyone!

This movie kind of shows what space exploration was like in the early days. It has some interesting concepts and a lot of decent scenes. It does move a little too slow and is easily forgettable. See it for a drama, not a sci fi.
