The best Coen brothers comedy the Coen brothers never made. "Ruthless People" is a laugh per minute crime caper.

Back in the 80s, studios were bizarrely convinced of Bette Midler's star power...this is probably the least offensive of her offerings, a mildly amusing caper movie in which an amusingly hateful and spoilt Midler is kidnapped by a goody two shoes couple, only to find her spiteful husband Danny DeVito unsurprisingly doesn't want her back.

I LOVED this movie when I first saw it and although it has gotten a bit dated, I still found it humorous. Danny DeVito plays Sam Stone, a lying, cheating, scoundrel who is tired of his nagging wife and is devilishly delighted when a naive couple whom he's victimized kidnap her for a ransom he never intends to pay so he celebrates with a bottle of champagne. Bette Midler is the kidnapped heiress Barbara Stone who we hate at first because she is so mean to her kidnappers played by a young struggling couple, Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater. Sam’s mistress is played beautifully by adulterous Anita Morris who has an idiot for a boyfriend played by Bill Pullman. I was laughing from beginning to end!

The plot is like that of a crime thriller, with many twists and turns, but here they lead to some hysterical moments and a great payoff of an ending. Increasingly ridiculous and consistently funny.

I did enjoy this movie. I think Midler and DeVito are such great comedians. The plot is goofy and it tries to hard to tie it all together, but it's still a fun show. Judge Reinhold is endearing as the kidnapper with a soft heart and Pullman is good as the really stupid boyfriend.
