Weekend Box Office: Suicide Squad Scores August Record as Jason Bourne Takes a Tumble

Chris Kavan - wrote on 08/07/16 at 09:39 PM CT

It was really no contest. Even with the pretty awful reviews, Suicide Squad came out on top and destroyed the previous August record. The only dark cloud on the horizon for the DC film is that it played incredibly front-loaded and considering the massive drops both Star Trek and Jason Bourne have both taken, it's a pretty good bet Suicide Squad is also going to have a big drop-off next weekend. …

New in Theaters August 05: Suicide Squad, Nine Lives

There is pretty much no doubt as to which film is going to open on top this weekend. For months now all we have heard about is how different Suicide Squad is going to be from Batman v. Superman - DC needs a win and this is supposed to be their answer. Aside from that, Kevin Spacey is a cat. I have a feeling I know what film is going to get the bulk of attention. Granted, Jason Bourne should …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of August 2-August 8

FROM THE BIG SCREEN: Yorgos Lanthimos, the director behind the Academy Award-nominated "Dogtooth," helmed the provocative, edgy, and wicked "The Lobster," a film about love, relationships, and societal conformity. In a near future, society holds "romance" so dearly that unattached, single people are sent off to a strange hotel where they must partner up or be turned into the animal of their …

La La Land, The Wild Life, Bastards and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

Harley Lond is going to be delayed with his usual DVD blog so I'm stepping up early with the MPAA Ratings Bulletin instead. Too bad this week is a bit on the boring side. An animated film with no big voices, a musical (an original too) and a comedy about finding your family. Hey, at least two out of the three star J.K. Simmons. Sure, all three are wide releases but I can't say any of them have …

Weekend Box Office: Jason is Bourne Again While Bad Moms Delivers and Nerve Struggles

Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/31/16 at 08:23 PM CT

It was another marvelous weekend. Even if it was down a bit from last weekend, it still showed a 27% gain over the same weekend last year. A lot of that has to do with Matt Damon's return to his signature role, one that didn't go unnoticed by movie-goers, who welcomed the return with the second-best opening for the series. That, unfortunately, met a bit drop for Star Trek. It was a good week for …

New in Theaters July 29: Jason Bourne, Bad Moms, Nerve

Star Trek beamed away with a pretty impressive win last weekend. Animated films continue to show impressive staying power and even a little horror-film-that-could opened to big numbers. Which is funny, because this weekend brings us a big action film, another horror film and, to shake things up a bit, a female-driven R-rated comedy. I have a feeling the Matt Damon's return as everyone's favorite …

CHiPs, Florence Foster Jenkins and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/27/16 at 10:11 AM CT

Hopefully you had a long week to get ready for this because we have not one, but two wide-release films getting their ratings due. I always say I want more, but things are slowing to a trickle these last few weeks. I can't even say I'm that excited over what managed to get their ratings this week, but hopefully some of you are. Anyways, there's probably a good chance that Meryl Streep gets …

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of July 26-August 1

THIS WEEK'S BEST BETS:
There's something about down-and-out antihero detectives that endears then to book readers, TV viewers and moviegoers; from Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade to Johnny Staccato and Jim Rockford, from Jackson Brodie to Harry Hole, these guys are damaged yet have strong moral compasses; they've been beat down by the system yet stand up and fight back again and again; they're …

Weekend Box Office: Star Trek Beyond Dethrones Pets, Lights Out Lights Up, Ice Age Collapses

Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/24/16 at 06:13 PM CT

It was a great weekend for Hollywood as, led by the latest Star Trek film, for only the sixth time in history (and the first since May 24, 2015) the top five film all grossed over $20 million. That meant the top 12 earned $183 million, which was up an impressive 29.4% compared to the same weekend last year. While not all films have something to celebrate (sorry Ice Age and Ghostbusters), …

New in Theaters July 22: Star Trek Beyond, Ice Age: Collision Course, Lights Out

Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/21/16 at 06:42 AM CT

It's been a long time since anything but an animated film has topped the box office. This week offers the best chance at a live-action film coming out on top as Star Trek Beyond looks to give the animated films a run for their money. Granted, there is yet another animated film coming out, along with a mid-summer horror offering - so it's going to be a bit crowded. We can only hope that the three …
