New in Theaters Feb. 28: Non-Stop, Son of God

All the talk the past few weeks has been about the phenomenal success of The Lego Movie. The animated film is well on its way to a $200 million domestic gross and a with a sequel already in the works, looks to have established a new franchise. But even with Lego dominating, that means pretty much every other film has been at best "solid" but much more likely "disaster". Any film with a decent …

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:
"Gravity": Despite its impressive boxoffice take (past the $250 million mark in the U.S.) and it's technical wizardry, Alfonso Cuaron's tale of a medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) on her first shuttle mission who is stranded alone in the emptiness of space after her ship is destroyed is really a slight piece of work. Yes, the special effects are breathtaking -- …
Weekend Box Office: Lego Movie Threepeats, 3 Days Doesn't Kill, Pompeii a Real Disaster

Although none of the new movies could manage to topple the might that is The Lego Movie, even with a somewhat lackluster weekend, 2014 continued to outperform 2013 (which got off to a notoriously slow start before rebounding mightily during the spring/summer period). Hopefully this year continues to impress, but the new movies better start stepping up soon, or it won't be long before the box …
New in Theaters Feb. 21: Pompeii, 3 Days to Kill

With no romance film being able to knock down The Lego Movie (over Valentine's Day Weekend no less), it's looking like the animated Juggernaut is going to stay firmly in the first place position probably all the way through March. That means the outlook isn't so rosy for the two films opening this weekend. One looks like the kind of big-budget picture usually reserved for summer, the other looks …

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:
There are no major theatrical releases coming to home video this week.
COLLECTIBLES:
Topping the list this week is "American Experience: 1964" (2014), a must-see, incredibly informative documentary that tracks the events that occurred in 1964, a year that saw the baby boomer generation rise to prominence with an emphasis on rock 'n' roll, psychedelics and …
Weekend Box Office: The Lego Movie Continues 'Awesome' Run, Kevin Hart Opens Hot, RoboCop Stumbles
Chris Kavan - wrote on 02/16/14 at 08:16 PM CT
Love might have been in the air - but the weekend was still dominated by an animated movie that is sure to become the first major blockbuster of 2014. A couple of 80s remakes were upstaged by a red-hot comedian (and a strong ensemble cast) while Colin Farrell had nothing to celebrate as his tearjerker failed to find much of an audience. The total box office was up an impressive $35 million …
New in Theaters Feb. 14: RoboCop, About Last Night, Endless Love, Winter's Tale

Will love conquer Legos? That is going to be the big question over the Valentine's Day weekend as not less than three films (and one man/machine hybrid) take on the successful animated film. Granted, all three films are going after love in three very different ways: comedy, drama and fantasy - so at least couples will have a choice about what genre they can stomach the most. But that also means …

THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:
What do you think about watching a film about a 77-year-old man wordlessly floundering around on a foundering boat for 106 minutes? Well if that man is Robert Redford, the director is young hotshot J.C. Chandor, and the film is "All is Lost," then you're talking about an hour and a half of gripping, enthralling moviewatching. The plot: On a solo voyage in the …
Weekend Box Office: The Lego Movie Knocks the Blocks Off Competition
Chris Kavan - wrote on 02/09/14 at 06:41 PM CT
It was a big weekend for original films as an animated giant and an ensemble dream cast helped shape a monster box office. It also goes to show that shaking up traditional models (a family film? In February?), while unpredictable, can lead to some stunning results. Of course this means we're going to be getting a family film every February now (and, like horror films in January, will become …
New in Theaters Feb. 07: Monuments Men, The Lego Movie, Vampire Academy

We should finally have a new box office champion after a few weeks of lackluster entries. The new films run the gamut from family-friendly animation, to tween-age catty vamps to a discerning adult Nazi art-hunting caper. And, if I were a betting man, I would say that families always draw in the biggest numbers - but it should be a good weekend no matter what movie comes out on top.
THE …
