Weekend Box Office: Rampage Tops Box Office as A Quiet Place Nears $100 Million

Dwayne Johnson can breath a sigh of relief. Though it was neck-and-neck with A Quiet Place, Rampage eventually came out on top to win the weekend. The opening may not be as rock solid as one would hope, but the raging beasts earned decent enough reviews and audiences seemed happy as well. The bad news is that the film has just one more week to impress before Avengers makes all the money. …
New in Theaters April 13: Rampage, Sgt. Stubby, Isle of Dogs, Beirut, Truth or Dare

It has been a nice mix at the theater this year. Black Panther was a huge hit, Ready Player One was nerd-tastic fun and A Quiet Place proved horror still has what it takes. This week is about to add a lot more to the mix. Dwayne Johnson returns hoping Rampage can crush the competition. Sgt. Stubby looks to corral the family crowd while Truth or Dare hopes there is room for two competing horror …
Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/11/18 at 09:49 AM CT
The consistency of that old "two decent ratings a week" is alive and well, folks but at least this time the two movies are, to paraphrase a certain Commander in Chief "Huuuuuuuuuge!" Avengers assemble once again in what is certain to be, if not the biggest, certainly damn close (Black Panther set the bar awfully high) and we get to return to Jurassic World in what is also certain to be a massive …

FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
"The Greatest Showman": The very popular musical drama about the rise of P.T. Barnum and his creation of "the greatest show on earth": the Barnum & Bailey Circus, starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya; from Fox ... "Phantom Thread": Gorgeous deconstructive romance directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, reuniting him with Daniel Day-Lewis …
Weekend Box Office: A Quiet Place Makes Some Noise, Ready Player One Holds Second, Blockers Third
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/08/18 at 07:45 PM CT
It was a great weekend for genre films. A Quiet Place provided one of the best openings for a horror film and Blockers proved that comedy is still a strong draw. Black Panther continued its blazing path to glory while Ready Player One was a second-week winner, here and abroad. The limited box office likewise enjoyed a great debut from You Were Never Really Here while Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs …
New in Theaters April 06: A Quiet Place, Blockers, Chappaquiddick, The Miracle Season
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/05/18 at 06:49 AM CT
Ready Player One became Steve Spielberg's biggest opening in nearly a decade last weekend. This weekend it will face off against a silent (but deadly) horror film, a R-rated comedy of parental control, a fact-based drama and an uplifting story. Oh, and Black Panther is still on the prowl even after seven weeks of shows. It will be interesting to see how Spielberg's nerd-fest nostalgia trip holds …
Captive State and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

Sigh - a familiar pattern is emerging, and one that leaves me with naught to do but hope for better. Once again, I'm faced with the stark reality of only being able to talk about one new wide release this week but at least this time it's a much more intriguing film. It's an interesting take on being occupied by enemy forces, so at least there's that. That's all you get, again, but I hold out …

Weekend Box Office: Ready Player One, Acrimony Power Easter Weekend
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/01/18 at 08:01 PM CT
Ready Player One had virtually no competition and, as such, turned out to be Steven Spielberg's best opening in nearly a decade. Meanwhile, Tyler Perry also had a good debut with Acrimony while the faithful continued to support I Can Only Imagine as the third entry in the God's Not Dead series was buried and doesn't look to be resurrected any time soon. Black Panther continued to enjoy a steady …
New in Theaters March 30: Ready Player One, Acrimony, Gods Not Dead: A Light in Darkness
Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/29/18 at 06:42 AM CT
It's going to be a feast for the eyes and nostalgia as Steven Spielberg delivers one of my more anticipated movies of the year in Ready Player One. The film contains so many Easter Eggs, you won't need to worry about that bunny this year. If visiting the Oasis isn't your idea of a good time, Gods Not Dead: A Light in Darkness provides the faithful with and Easter miracle while Tyler Perry …
