Early Man, Strangers: Prey at Night and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

My plea to the board went mostly unanswered as this week is another light release for movies earning their ratings. We have an animated feature from the great Aardman Studio (of Wallace and Gromit fame) along with a horror sequel coming a full decade after the original. Still, it's another rather uninspired entry, and I can once again only hope that the coming weeks bring me a bit more to work …

FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
Arriving 35 years after the first "Blade Runner," "Blade Runner 2049" is much more than a sequel; it stands on its own as a visionary science fiction outing that would make old Phillip K. Dick (author of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" upon which the original was based) proud. 1992's "Blade Runner," directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer …
Weekend Box Office: Jumanji Holds on to Top Spot as The Post Expands Strong, Commuter Delivers

Although four new films either opened or expanded over the long MLK weekend, Jumaniji continued to flex its muscles as it easily remained the top film at the box office. Steven Spielberg's true-life drama The Post had an excellent expansion while Liam Neeson continued to show he is a strong action draw with a solid debut for The Commuter. While Jumanji and Commuter brought in families and action …
New in Theaters January 12: The Commuter, Proud Mary, Paddington 2, The Post

After Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle made a surge into first place last weekend, the box office is about to be hit with three new wide releases and a major expansion for an awards-season hopeful. Liam Neeson gets back to doing what he does best (that is, kick ass), we have a bear of a family-friendly sequel, Taraji P. Henson also gets to flex some action muscles while Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep …
Overboard and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin
Chris Kavan - wrote on 01/10/18 at 10:12 AM CT
Just when I thought things were heating up, the board cools things down - like an arctic-style bomb cyclone. After weeks of some good updates, they throw me this weak update with a single - that is one - movie of note, and it's a freakin' gender-swapped remake of an 80s comedy. That's right - hope you liked Overboard, because here comes the next version. Sigh - I'm finding it hard to even get my …

FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
"It," the immensely popular big-screen remake of the 1990 TV mini-series, in which seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, face their worst nightmare -- an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town's children -- and battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise. Based on the Stephen King novel. Stars Bill …
Weekend Box Office: Jumanji Roars to First, Insidious Last Key Opens Strong
Chris Kavan - wrote on 01/07/18 at 07:30 PM CT
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will not longer be able to claim a record - but that's okay, as it can no longer be crowned the highest grossing movie never to hit first place because, well, it hit first place. With audiences loving it and Star Wars falling, the feel-good family action/adventure film was at the top of the box office. Insidious: The Last Key also had a strong opening (and also …
New in Theaters January 05: Insidious: The Last Key, Molly's Game

With Star Wars: The Last Jedi and an impressive Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle leading the charge, December went out with a bang (even if it couldn't quite stem the bleeding set by a rather lackluster summer). Now we reach 2018 and... things look to remain much the same. Sure, I'm guessing the latest Insidious chapter will scare up decent business, it's a franchise that tends to do well enough. …
Maze Runner: Death Cure, Proud Mary, Samson, Unsane and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

After a week-long break, the MPAA board is back, and they are on fire. There is a lot of ground to cover this time, from a YA franchise to animation, horror and action and yes, even another biblical epic. The list isn't so long this time, but it's almost full of major releases, just like it should be. Hopefully this is a good sign for the new year, because God knows we need 2018 to be a lot …

FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
Doug Liman's latest action adventure film, here with Tom Cruise, is the fast-paced and fun actioner "American Made." Cruise is delightfully brash as Barry Seal, a TWA pilot recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America; he soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the …
