Despite a strong Friday showing, Dinner for Schmucks wasn't able to overtake Inception as the #1 movie for the weekend.
With an estimated $27.5 million, Inception took top honors for the third straight week. Dinner performed in line with expectation, earning $23.3 million. The other two new wide released didn't offer much of a challenge. Cats & Dogs:The Revenge of Kitty Galore opened in 5th with $12.5 million - the lowest total for any digital 3D film to date, while the Zac Efron vehicle Charlie St. Cloud came in 6th with just $12.1.
Salt came in third, surpassing the $70 million with its $19.3 million while Despicable Me was still 4th place in its fifth week, earning another $15.5 million. Expect the animated film to break $200 million soon.
Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice took the biggest hit, losing over 54% of its audience while the Adam Sandler and co. comedy Grown Ups breached $150 million. Although plenty of movies are coming out next week, the only real threat to top Inception comes in the form of the Ferrell / Wahlberg comedy The Other Guys and the not-very-imaginative-titled Step Up 3D.
