THIS WEEK'S THEATRICAL RELEASES:
"Selma": With a tour-de-force performance by David Oyelowo, "Selma" is a heartfelt and gripping drama about the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Oyelowo) led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the Civil Rights Movement. Selma co-stars Oprah Winfrey, Tim Roth, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Common, Tessa Thompson, Giovanni Ribisi and Lorraine Toussaint. From Paramount ... With a brilliant performance by Timothy Spall and superb direction by Mike Leigh, "Mr. Turner" is an absorbing exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner's life (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty. DVD extras include commentary with writer-director Mike Leigh, a "Many Colours of Mr. Turner" featurette and a deleted scene. The Blu-ray adds "The Cinematic Palette: The Cinematography of Mr. Turner" featurette. From Sony ... Later this week we'll take a peek at "Fifty Shades of Grey," which is being released this Friday in an unrated edition.

SPECIAL INTEREST:
- "Hating Obama" (2014): President Obama has been the recipient of some of the most groundbreaking and hate-filled moments in American Presidential history. While it is clear and apparent that all Presidents have received some form of opposition and low approval ratings throughout their terms in office, President Obama has experienced many more instances that could be attributed to racism as America's first "black" President. The purpose of this documentary is to shine a light on the most egregious and hateful moments that we have seen President Obama and his family subjected to, while taking a look at his record of accomplishments and responses to some of the hatred. Ultimately the film leads us to open and continue a dialogue by asking the question: Is President Obama hated for his policies or because he's black? From Cinedigm.
- "Lost Rivers" (2012): Nearly every major city was built near the convergence of many rivers. As cities grew with the Industrial Revolution, these rivers became conduits for disease and pollution. The 19th century solution was to bury them underground and merge them with the sewer systems. They still run through today's metropolises, but do so out of sight. This documentary examines hidden waterways in cities around the world and introduces people dedicated to exploring and exposing them. From Icarus Films.
