On a slow week, the action ensemble The Expendables held off all newcomers to keep its top box office spot. With an estimated $16.5 million, it has made $65 million since opening.
The newer entries rated decent to embarrassing. On the top of the heap was Vampires Suck. With a $12.2 gross (or over $18 million since opening Wednesday) the parody film brought in a young audience, and a good deal of females as well. Spoofing the Twilight Saga will do that, apparently.
Also making a good showing was The Lottery Ticket in 4th place with $11.2 million. While it may not be the next Friday - it held up well enough in a crowded market.
Not holding up so well was Piranha 3D, Nanny McPhee Returns and The Switch. Despite getting a good critical reception, the campy Piranha only managed to scrape up $10 million for 6th place - Nanny McPhee Returns made $8.3 million while The Switch could only scrape up $8.1 million.
Last weeks Eat, Pray, Love dropped about 48% of its audience to land in 3rd place with $12 million while the under-performing Scott Pilgrim added just $5 million to its total.
We'll see if the Re-release of Avatar of an Exorcism can heat up the box office next time around.
