What to Crave This Week? Madness and Paris

If you crave a little mystery or a lot of action, the new releases this week should appeal to you.

The re-teaming of director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio gives us a nice little noirish thriller in Shutter Island. Although a tad bit predictable in my mind, it does a fine job of creating a great atmosphere and memorable characters. Worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet. The only downfall is this edition contains no special features, so those wanting any kind of commentary or behind-the-scenes look are better off waiting for the special edition, which will inevitably come out six months or so down the road.

In the action category you have the John Travolta / Jonathan Rhys Meyers vehicle From Paris with Love. Travolta may be a bit beyond his Pulp Fiction days, but if you're in the mood for action, I'm sure this will fit the bill. Personally, I'll probably still wait until it hits cable. This version comes with the director's commentary and making of included.

Blu-Ray fans will be happy to know The Illusionist is coming out in all its high-def glory. Frankly, I preferred The Prestige over The Illusionist, however this is still worth the watch.

If the new releases don't hold any water, try come classic Bob Hope. The Bob Hope: Thanks for the Memories Collection includes three new-to-DVD films, including The Cat and the Canary, Thanks for the Memory and Nothing but the Truth. Of course it also includes repeat appearances by Road to Morocco, The Paleface and The Ghost Breakers. But if you're a fan of Bob Hope, you might as well take the set as they do feature special features on most of the films.

A decidedly mixed bag this week, but depending on your taste, there could be a gem or two to invest in.
