Too much circumstancial to justify calling her a crusader. (Or making AFI's Heroes List-c'mon!) And "free spirited existence"? That's a nice euphemism.

A powerful, disturbing, dramatic true story. Streep and Cher are great. Everyone should see this at least once.

Carefree wastrel turned nuclear whistleblower.

A trio of strong performances carry the biographical drama 'SILKWOOD' together. Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher play a ragtag threesome living together and working at the same nuclear power plant.
Unfortunately, they discover that the plant is grossly negligent to worker safety and some employees might be contaminated by dangerous radioactive material. Streep plays the lead Karen Silkwood who joined her local union to combat the plant's dangerous conditions. It's an interesting character who doesn't have all the answers and makes mistakes but isn't intimidated by her superiors or coworkers.
Even if you removed the conspiracy thriller aspect of the plot, it's an interesting character study about the interactions between Silkwood, her gruff boyfriend (Russell), and their lesbian …
