Joe Carnahan's frenetic action-crime thriller pits assassins vs bounty hunters vs the FBI vs the mafia. All are aiming to protect or murder a highly valuable witness (Piven). It starts out promisingly with a huge cast of strange or dangerous characters setting up a climactic showdown. The flashy camerawork and direction make the Nevada setting colorful. But there's too many characters, too many subplots, and a lot of aggressive editing with the action scenes. So you wind up not telling much apart. Still, some cast members work. Jeremy Piven is appropriately unlikable as the stage magician turned snitch. Alicia Keys is coolheaded and sexy as a hitwoman. Chris Pine is startlingly creepy as a psycho skinhead hitman.

There's nothing of substance here, in the way of plot or theme. However, the ADD pace of the film and the constant bombardment of colorful characters, violent action scenes, and witty one-liners certainly makes for an entertaining film, if not an especially deep one.

"Smokin' Aces" by Yojimbo

A mob hit is ordered on a casino entertainer prompting a race against time between the FBI and various factions wanting to claim the $1 million dollar bounty on his life. This film is a throwback to the early 1990s when every film released seemed to be a full of characterful gangsters and wacky hitmen in a desperate attempt to jump on the Reservoir Dogs bandwagon. It can best be described as The Wacky Races with guns, as the hitmen (and women) race to reach their target, bumping each other off along the way. There are no clever twists or intellectual plot devices (the one "twist" is easy to guess and superfluous to the action anyway), just an extreme lack of subtlety and high bodycount. The cast is above par, and although I usually hate it when movies cast pop stars, Alicia Keys and …

Smokin' Aces

Smokin' Aces is an OK action movies for it's good acting and cleaver ending, but the script and bad characters keep it from actually succeeding.

The Direction is average, but the script is boring except for in parts. The first half of the film suffers to be as good as the last half.

Ryan Reynolds is maturing as an actor, he is taking on more serious roles and i'm starting to see that he is actually a good actor. He gives a good performance in this movie. Jeremy Piven is terrific in his commanding performance. Alicia Keys and rapper Common are good in their film debuts. But sadly, Ray Liotta, Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Peter Berg and Martin Henderson are wasted, having very little to do. Jason Bateman is quite funny, in a small role.

The final action scene is good, the twist and …

Violent, over-the-top and in-your-face thriller.

The plot to "Smokin' Aces" is about how a Mob boss, Primo Sparazza has taken out a hefty contract on Buddy "Aces" Israel - a sleazy magician who has agreed to turn state's evidence against the Vegas mob. The FBI, sensing a chance to use this small-time con to bring down big-target Sparazza, places Aces into protective custody-under the supervision of two agents dispatched to Aces' Lake Tahoe hideout. When word of the price on Aces' head spreads into the community of ex-cons and cons-to-be, it entices bounty hunters, thugs-for-hire, smokin' hot vixens and double-crossing mobsters to join in the hunt. With all eyes on Tahoe, this rogues' gallery collides in a comic race to hit the jackpot and rub out Aces.

Overall, I thought it was very well done. The plot was good, the characters were …
