Michael Crichton’s intriguing page-turner SPHERE is watered down as a routine and expensive looking retread of better films like The Abyss. The cast isn’t terrible (save for a miscast Sharon Stone) but it’s not warranting the lengthy running time. Oddly the movie still seems choppy and edited haphazardly. A rare suspenseful scene consisting of an attack by an unseen giant squid does promise a change of pace. But that doesn’t happen. For Crichton completists only.

Okay, so I have watched this movie several times. It is one of my all time favorite movies. The acting is superb. The underwater scenes are phenomenal. The plot line is new and refreshing. As always, Michael Crichton is a genius!

Ponderous, verbose sci-fi that entertained me (or rather, I entertained myself) for as long as I was trying to figure out what was going on. There are some nice images and interestingly spooky ideas (such as the unfinished copies of Moby Dick) but the "explanation" is pathetic and the ending a total anti-climax.
