Street fighter to me was a big failure. The acting was awful and the directing was dreadful.

A bunch of third rate straight to DVD action "stars" in stupid costumes hitting each other. Absolute pish.

Even cheesier than Mortal Kombat - and that's saying something. The casting is the main issue, as I just can't take Jean-Claude Van Damme and poor Raul Julia - it's too bad this was his last theatrical film, because he deserved to go out better.

The Expendables of video game movies

Indyfreak - wrote on 04/22/2019

Strangely campy and shallow action/adventure based off the video game series.
Weird that the writer of Die Hard wound up not only directing but also writing the story for this. It plays out like an ott parody of '80s war movies coupled with goofy punk fantasy. Yet Raul Julia is actually good in this. He hits the right note as the villainous would-be dictator General M. Bison. JCVD is game for the heroic Colonel Guile but his accent is unsuitable for one-liners that are pretty bad anyway.
There's a ton of characters roaming around fighting shouting and cracking jokes. But despite the frantic action, this is clearly meant for younger audiences who may find it boring anyway. Ironically it's saved from being a total failure due to its campy silliness.

Raul Julia's Campy M. Bison is Worth It

Azerafel - wrote on 04/25/2014

This movie has a cheesy plot, stars a very heavily-accented Jean-Claude Van Damme as American marine Guile, demotes main protagonists Ryu and Ken to supporting characters (which probably has something to do with Guile being a more popular character to western audiences at the time), and has next to nothing to do with the video game series, but still scrapes 2 stars in my book due to one thing: RAUL JULIA. Having been diagnosed with stomach cancer, he took the role at the request of his grandchildren, knew the movie was awful and totally ran with it anyway. The fact that he hammed his way through his portrayal of Bison was what made the movie watchable. If you watch this movie for anything let it be his performance - if you enjoy it half as much as he seemed to have playing M. Bison …
