The theatrically released sequel to Richard Donner's "Superman" has some very good sequences, but the story's writing often drags and is sometimes a bit illogical.

A very good sequel to the biggest superhero icon.

While Lester's penchant for comedy can sometimes undermine otherwise wonderfully dramatic moments, the original Superman II is an intelligent, fast-paced, and very imaginative superhero film with a great cast (in particular Terence Stamp's aristocratic General Zod).

"Superman II" by Yojimbo

Lois Lane puts two and two together and (finally!) works out that Clark and Superman are one and the same, leading to his renouncing his powers to live his life as an ordinary man not counting on the appearance of three Kryptonian super-criminals. Even as a teenager, I always prefered my superheroes with a darker streak meaning that the whiter than white Superman never really appealed to me. This story written by Mario (The Godfather) Puzo has some intriguing ideas but it all falls apart somewhat in the execution. Terence Stamp makes an amusingly camp supervillain and it's nice to see Superman meet his match which means that mercifully there is no mention of the ubiquitous Kryptonite in the story at all. Gene Hackman is also as reliable as always as Lex Luthor, but the rest of the …

Superman 2 stays good but has problems

A fairly good sequel to Superman which is one of my favorite films. If it was the Donner cut I would have given it a better review because it gets rid of some of the problems with this film. The problems are the over cartoonish western town which distracts from the villains. Zod is a fairly good villain but I feel he acts too naively compared to the superior Lex Luthor who I wish would just kill em. The other problem is the fight scenes are dated and there are those necessary slap stick scenes during the fight that take way from it. Then there are those extra powers Superman gets at the end that seem sudden and haphazard. It is good still because it has some of the charm of the first one, the original players are all still good and certain scenes work very well namely the encounter with …

For "Zod" sake, this is a good movie

Years ago, on the planet of "Krypton", three master-criminals (Terrance Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) were trapped and sentenced to the "Phantom Zone" for all eternity. Years later, on the planet Earth, one of the greatest criminals known, one "Lex Luthor" (Gene Hackman) escapes from prison with his dimwitted assistant "Otis" (Ned Beaty), whom eventually is left behind at the prison and is immediately captured by prison guards. "Luthor" and "Miss Teschmacher" (Valerie Perrine) go by a hot air balloon to the North Pole and discovers the "Fortress of Solitude", the secret base of "Superman" (Christopher Reeve).

Meanwhile, in Paris, France, "Lois Lane" is covering a hostage situation at the Eiffel Tower, and, like always, she gets herself in trouble. "Superman" swoops in …
