There are nuggets of Mann's potential throughout. Signs of a great director in the making. The story is the major flaw. It's pretty stereotypical and doesn't offer much investment with the characters or situations, despite the best efforts of James Caan and the rest of the cast. There's no central focus or urgency to this piece and the heisting is an afterthought. Shame it has to be that way in a movie called 'Thief'. In the end, it's just another crime movie.

Mann, who is often the expert of drama and atmosphere, didn't quite have a good grip on it yet when he made this movie. With a pretty good cast and a normal plot, I expected a little more. Mann fans will want to check this one out.

The plot is also rather generic and James Caan's bullish interpretation of the leading character makes him rather …
