A poignant coming-of-age story becomes a touching family film with breath-taking scenery and strong performances. Especially the multiple trained deer that play Flag the mischievous fawn. Warning though about the bittersweet ending, it's not for the faint of heart or those who hated the ending of Old Yeller.

A beautiful movie, and original in its distinctive story telling. Claude Jarman, Jr. deserves his reputation as one of the best young actors in movie history. The whole cast is wonderful, and the direction original and top notch.
