The thing that elevates this film above a standard sports film is Gary Cooper's humble and nuanced portrayal of Lou Gehrig. His final speech at the end of the film, particularly, is a case study in acting.

An effective very sweet biographical film with a very sad ending. I like Pride of the Yankees a whole lot, It is certainly sweet and may not put a whole lot into anything gritty but it is nice to watch something this truly sweet. Apparently anyways many people feel this is how Lou Gehrig really was. In the way it is it is nice. It may have a few old timey acting hiccups but on a whole it is just a very nice film.
