I can't knock this film for not having any cohesiveness whatsoever, because that's the original intent. I also knew this before viewing. Nothing but bizarre moment after bizarre moment. Some situations I found to be funny for random reasons. The constant unexplained madness somehow works as a whole. It's unfathomable, yet watchable.

A quite bizarre, surreal walk through a post-apocalyptic war-torn world featuring talking animals, a quaint country manor with a not-so-quaint family, and an Alice-in-Wonderland-type vibe. It's all very odd - Louis Malle has talent, but I don't think this is where you should start.

A bizarre, shapeless, surreal aberation on war, sexuality and death with an approach not unlike Alice in Wonderland; it incorporates a talking unicorn, a schizophrenic old woman, gruesome death scenes and plenty of female flesh, yet somehow it manages to be strangely unenjoyable. Malle is an odd director for this material and the main character gives an empty performance. Mainstream audiences should steer clear, and even movie completists will find little to like. Final Grade: C-
