An unusually amoral James Stewart faces off with a vicious and corrupt judge in a nice shades-of-grey character driven western. Also featuring the best cowpoke sidekick in the business, Walter Brennan.

The fourth of the "psychological westerns" directed by Anthony Mann and starring Jimmy Stewart. All of them are very enjoyable as westerns, all let you enjoy Jimmy Stewart's acting, of corse, and all of them seem to have a little something extra, a cut above most wesern movie fare. This one gets a slight edge, for me, from the beautiful mountain scenery.
