Lean film noir about a pickpocket earning the ire of Communist spies. Jean Peters is a good femme fatale. Samuel Fuller gives the movie a gritty mean vibe.

A film that encompasses a Communist spy, pickpocket and a wise old lady trying to survive. An important microfilm from Candy's (Peters) bag was stolen by a pickpocket. Skip McCoy is the culprit based on Moe's description. Captain Dan Tiger and Winoki investigates while Joey and Candy argue over a missing frame. Some minor hindsight's this reviewer noticed were the lack of sufficient background importance on the microfilm, the relationship of Joey and Candy and some dragging scenes. The camera direction was outstanding and score climactic which fit the tense scenes. Acting were believable but the true highlight was the affable Thelma Ritter as Moe, who was nominated Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
