Andrew Keir is utterly convincing as the capable but concerned scientist Bernard Quatermass who investigates the excavation of an ancient spacecraft in present-day London. He raises above and beyond this material and makes it almost work. But the movie is not that interesting once it makes its big reveal. It doesn't help that the special effects are pretty hokey. Conceptually, the premise that aliens had been influencing human evolution is a good start and that modern day problems such as war or racism are a just a byproduct of that secret influence is forward thinking for a genre film at this time. It's too bad the movie really is not that scary or even exciting.
