The list of good actors in this movie is remarkable. John Cusack, Ken Watanabe, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, David Morse, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Franka Potente in the same movie together? The movie is entertaining for that alone. They're the type of actors that could make a Michael Bay movie a prestige piece. I'm sure that Shanghai had the same lofty ambition in mind because every shot and line of dialogue seems tailor-made for that in mind. It's not even Oscar-bait material unfortunately. It's a classic case of style versus substance. But it's undeniably watchable and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it.

Good idea but not very well written. It could have been one of the best thrillers. Atmosphere is good, Shanghai in ww2 very good place to set thriller at. Some parts are very good. Biggest problem except for story that could be better is preaching love story. I would give it 3 stars if there wasnt for it. If you enjoy in noir films, ww2 and are ready to ignore stupid things in film than you should see it.
