Crime drama that uses a low budget to its advantage to skewer expectations and build atmosphere. The setting is a small town in the Ozarks that hates outsiders but reveres a notorious outlaw. The story is about a reckless reporter (Nielsen) who gambles his own safety for a chance to interview said criminal, to the dismay of his new wife (Miller). And the movie does things you normally wouldn’t expect from a little B-movie like this. It helps immensely when the supporting cast is a lot of reliable character actors. Leslie Nielsen is fine as the newspaperman who gets in over his head, but the more fascinating arc is with his wife as played by Colleen Miller. Robert J. Wilke is suitably menacing as the charismatic gang leader.
